Roger Charles Steele, of Littlestown, PA., passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Simms) Steele, for 54 years.
Roger was born February 4, 1941 in Westernport, Md. He was the son of the late Charles C. Steele and Bertha (Leake) Steele.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Stephanie Ledford and husband, Eric; Stephan Steele and wife Melissa; grandchildren, Caitlin Steele and husband Ted DiSalvo, Cutter Steele, Seth Bussard and wife Becca; great grandchildren, Willow and Leighton Bussard.
A life long student, Roger graduated from Frostburg University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education majoring in Biology and Ecology. He was a career science/biology teacher at Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge, Maryland for over 30 years.
Because of his dedication to the environment, he was also a Director of the Adams County Conservation District for 17 years, and an PA Alternate Commissioner, the Interstate Commission of the Potomac River Basin for 19 years. Roger also participated locally on the Planning Commission and the Comprehensive Plan Committee for both Mt. Joy Township and Adams County.
Roger worked in partnership with his wife and neighbors, for 38 years, at Alloway Creek Gardens. Roger and Barbara moved to the farm in the early 70’s. Working hard on the farm with a small herd of cattle as well as the greenhouse, Roger was proud of the farm’s recognition as a Chesapeake Bay Program Farm. He enjoyed life on the farm with family and friends as well as traveling to view giant redwoods, mountains and sea shores.
Roger was an avid star-watcher, a collector of rocks, loved his kayak, travels to Chincoteague and most importantly spending time with family! He never took a bad photo, as he was always smiling. He provided a lifetime of wonderful memories and learning experiences for family and friends.
A Celebration of Life and tree planting in his memory is being planned for June. Please contact family members for details. Memorial donations may be sent to Barts-Centenary United Methodist Church, Littlestown, PA. or the Watershed Alliance of Adams County.
